Supporting Your Employees During Back-to-School Season

As we approach the latter part of the year, many employers with January 1st benefit plan years are preparing for open enrollment and other year-end benefits administration tasks. At the same time, another significant event is unfolding for many employees—back-to-school season.

Why Employers Should Pay Attention

For employees who are caregivers or parents of school-age children, the back-to-school time brings unique challenges that can impact their well-being and productivity:

  • Schedule disruptions: back-to-school often requires a significant reshuffling of daily routines— drop-offs, pick-ups, extracurricular activities and more which can affect employees’ availability and work schedules
  • Financial strain: tuition payments and other school-related expenses can place additional pressure on household budgets
  • Increased stress: navigating new routines, environments and financial demands can elevate stress and anxiety levels for both employees and their dependents

How Employers Can Respond

Lead with Awareness and Empathy

Reinforce workplace flexibility and empower managers to support team members during this transition. Provide training on empathy and awareness that can help leaders create a more responsive and inclusive environment for employees with caregiving responsibilities.

Proactively Communicate Well-Being Resources

Ensure employees are aware of available mental health, caregiving and wellness benefits. Timely communication can make a meaningful difference for those experiencing heightened stress during this period.

Anticipate Shifts in Benefit Utilization

Fall and winter often bring increased employee caregiving needs due to seasonal illnesses like the flu. Communicate the importance of vaccines and encourage remote work (if possible) for those exposed to diseases like the flu that can spread quickly through work sites.

Back-to-school season will be top-of-mind for many employees throughout August and September. Employers who recognize and respond to the unique challenges of this time can foster a more supportive workplace culture and enhance employee well-being.
